American is rolling out the same automatic 20% refund experience for AA20 revenue tickets that it recently launched for AAdvantage mileage award ticket refunds.
This means beginning Nov. 15, retirees and their eligible travelers will soon be able to self-serve their revenue tickets through aa.com or the American mobile app and automatically receive their 20% refund. The steps you need to take are the same as for AAdvantage award tickets (automatic mileage refunds launched Oct. 15).
For our systems to automatically process your refund for award tickets today and for revenue tickets beginning Nov. 15, here is what you need to do:
When purchasing a ticket or redeeming miles for an award ticket on aa.com or the American Airlines app, you must indicate on the Passenger Details page whether you are traveling for business or leisure purposes. Note: Leaving this option blank will make your ticket(s) ineligible for your AA20 refund.
Find out more information and action steps on the Retiree site, including how to ensure your traveler profiles in Travel Planner are set up correctly so our systems can automatically process your AA20 refunds.
You asked for more options within Travel Planner to make trip planning easier, and you can now view a route map, filter Best bets and more easily find alternate routing into your destination airport. Travel privileges are one of the most valuable perks of working at (and retiring from) American. Adding these features to Travel Planner makes it that much easier — and maybe even more fun — for you to get where you want to go. Learn more about these new features on the Retiree site, then head over to Travel Planner to explore more.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) tentatively awarded American a round-trip daily flight between San Antonio (SAT) and DCA Oct. 16. DCA is a slot-restricted airport where airlines need to hold specific departure and arrival flight times and is governed by the Perimeter Rule, which limits nonstop service to and from DCA to destinations within 1,250 statute miles. The nonstop service between SAT and DCA will provide unparalleled benefits for both cities and their respective regions. The city of San Antonio is the fastest-growing city in the United States, home to one of the largest military bases in the country, and the largest city in the U.S. with a majority Hispanic population without nonstop service. Nonstop access would help shorten travel times between Washington, D.C., and San Antonio. Learn more on our Newsroom.
We began service to Wilmington, Delaware (ILG) Oct. 7, offering customers daily service on a Landline luxury motorcoach. We are the only airline to serve all 50 states! On the same day, American launched service to Provo, Utah (PVU), from DFW and PHX. PVU joins a network of more than 225 destinations across the U.S. American will offer up to four daily flights from PVU.
The most recent episode of Tell Me Why dives into the work the U.S. Travel Association is doing to advocate on behalf of the travel industry. Tell Me Why is available on American’s Newsroom on the podcast page so your family and friends can check it out also.

American announced two leaders, Capt. Cory Glenn, Check Pilot, and Krystal McCoy, Director, Airports and Technical Operations Recruitment, have been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Organization of Black Aviation Professionals (OBAP). This is a significant milestone for American, as it bolsters our relationship with OBAP and honors the legacy of the late Capt. David E. Harris, the first Black commercial airline pilot and a founding member of OBAP, who flew for American. OBAP is a valuable organization that provides support and mentorship to Black aerospace professionals. Cory and Krystal's appointments reflect their successful contributions to the nonprofit's mission and American's commitment to creating awareness, access and opportunities to careers in aviation.
